Try everything…

During my intense inner search for what kind of photography jobs to focus on, I was always very open minded. I wanted to try everything. I knew Travel Photography probably wasn’t going to be viable and I needed something more stable once my daughter was born.

I kept invested in participating in workshops and taking assistant jobs whenever available. Think global, act local, right? With that in mind, I was fortunate to land a freelance gig with the local Key Biscayne Portal, an online local news platform that used to cover the annual ATP tennis tournement on the island. Back then it was called Sony Ericsson Open, then it changed in to Miami Open.

When I became a sports photographer

Besides owning a long lens 100/400mm that became useful once a year, I have always being a big fan of tennis. My entire family played it. I loved watching the matches, the crowd, the fans, the arenas, everything about the sport. So you can imagine how excited I was every time I could get on the courts to photograph the players.

I went on to cover this tournment for 4 years straight…lots of great memories, epic matches and fun times. Until recently when the location changed and the tournment was transfered to the Hard Rock Stadium. Nothing against it, but that cute local vibe is just not there. Those days certainly imporved my craft but no more Sports photography for me! #photobymayraroubach
